Bryan Spencer on the Classical Guitar, November 19, 2017 The Arts at Grace continues its 14th season with Bryan Spencer on the Classical Guitar, at 3 pm on Sunday, November 19, at Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court Street, in Cortland. A post concert reception for the audience and artists will take place. There is no charge for admission. Ithaca College Guitar Professor Pablo Cohen calls Bryan Spencer an outstanding graduate student. He is especially facile with works of Joaquin Turina and will perform Turina’s Hommage à Tárrega and Fandanguillo. Works by Claude Debussy, Manuel de Falla, and Erik Satie also are on the program. Fellow student Brendan Olivieri will join Spencer for Tonadilla by Rodrigo. Growing up in the hills around Naples, NY, Bryan Spencer had a childhood filled with guitar music played by several family members. Bryan picked up the instrument at about age 11 and continued playing in high school. He eventually taught himself finger picking. Classical guitar did not become an interest until he studied with Dennis Repino at Finger Lakes Community College. Once Spencer arrived at Ithaca College he was committed to classical guitar. He has obtained his BM in performance and is completing his master’s studies under Pablo Cohen. Spencer is looking forward to doctoral studies. Brendan Olivieri is also a student at Ithaca College. Like Spencer, he is completing an instrumental concentration on classical guitar under the direction of Pablo Cohen. Oliveri’s major is Sound Recording Technology. The Arts at Grace is a community outreach of Grace and Holy Spirit Church supported by many individuals, businesses, and foundations from the greater Cortland community. The series receives funding through CNY Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.
